Diesel Locomotive

A diesel-electric locomotive with a prime mover, generator, and traction motors.

  • Kind: DieselLocomotive
  • Extends: Car

The definition carries published/obtainable inputs plus the authored engine notch-RPM curve. The rest of the simulation (per-notch horsepower, the generator V-I curve, and the traction-motor constants) is synthesized from these values at load time.

All Car fields are inherited. Additional fields:

gearRatio

int[] = [62, 15]

Gear reduction ratio as [axle teeth, pinion teeth].

maxHorsepower

float = 1750

Rated horsepower at full throttle (notch 8). The per-notch horsepower curve is synthesized from this value using the standard EMD notch-power fractions.

maxSpeedMph

float = 65

Maximum service speed (mph). Sets the traction-motor RPM limit.

maxVoltage

float = 600

Main generator maximum (no-load) voltage. 500 for the EMD D4 (SW1), 600 for most other first-generation EMD units.

Per-motor continuous current rating (amps), from the EMD motor ratings tables. 0 auto-derives the rating from generator capacity.

notchRpm

float[]

Engine RPM at each throttle position: nine values, where index 0 is idle and 1–8 are the running notches. Notch 1 holds idle; notches 1→8 step evenly to the rated maximum (EMD F7 manual: “each running notch increases the engine speed 75 RPM from 275 idle to 800 full”). The EMD 567C tops at 835 (80 RPM/notch); the 567B/567 top at 800 (75 RPM/notch). For example, a 567C: [275, 275, 355, 435, 515, 595, 675, 755, 835].

numMotors

int = 4

Number of traction motors: 4 for B-B, 6 for C-C.

Starting tractive effort at stall (pounds). Sets the adhesion cap.

wheelDiameterIn

float = 40

Driving wheel diameter (inches).
