Experimental Branch

Experimental is an opt-in Steam beta branch where we release new versions of Railroader before they reach the default branch. Right now it carries 0.6, the MoW Update. Most of this documentation site describes 0.6, so you’ll need Experimental to use the modding tools covered here.

Expect rough edges, changes, and bugs! While we prioritize creating a quality game, the purpose of the Experimental branch is to get early feedback to improve the game over time. If you’d rather wait for a more polished release, stay on the default branch.

  1. In your Steam Library, right-click Railroader and choose Properties.
  2. Select Game Versions & Betas.
  3. Choose experimental.
  4. Wait for Steam to finish downloading the update, then launch the game.

No password is needed. To go back, return to the same menu and choose Default Public Version.

  • 0.6 can’t load saves from 2025.1 or earlier. Note that you can continue to play 2025.1 saves using the build on the legacy-2025.1.0 Steam branch.
  • 2025.1 can’t load saves made in 0.6. If you switch back to the default branch, your 0.6 railroads won’t be available there.
  • 0.6 keeps its saves, preferences, and mods in Documents\Railroader. It doesn’t move or delete anything 2025.1 left behind, so your 2025.1 saves are still there if you switch back.

Mods made for 2025.1 will need to be updated to work in 0.6. If you’re a mod author, see Migrating Mods. If you play with mods, check with each mod’s author for a 0.6 version.

Experimental is where your bug reports do the most good. If something breaks or doesn’t feel right, let us know, and mention that you’re on Experimental.
